Holding The Door For A Person Too Far Away
It's always polite to hold the door open for people, but sometimes you find yourself standing there letting the heat or AC out of the room. This one is awkward for both people involved, as the door holder would be rude to let go now that he's committed, and the other person feels the need to hurry up.
We get into a small metal box with a bunch of strangers every day, but it never gets less awkward. Nobody wants to strike up a conversation with a stranger in the elevator — what's the point, the ride will end in a few seconds? Instead, we just look at the floor or pretend we're texting.
Shaking hands when you first meet someone is appropriate, but sometimes wires get crossed and you go into a handshake hug tango. If you know the person well it's probably okay to hug them, but if you don't know them a handshake will do.
This shouldn't be awkward, but for some people, responding to a compliment is an awkwardness minefield. You don't want to sound arrogant, but you also shouldn't come of as self-deprecating. Just say thank you. If you can think a compliment for that person, then that could be a nice addition.
Waving seems so harmless, but it can become super awkward when misconstrued. Have you ever waved at your friend from far away, only to discover it was a look-alike? Or, even worse, have you seen someone waving at you and you waved back, only to find out they were waving at a person behind you? Just pretend you were going for a head scratch!
The last thing that you probably want to do when your walking around he city is to stop to talk a survey. While some street surveys can be helpful and informative, the surveyors will usually defy social norms by calling out to you. Instead of ignoring them like some people do, just politely say you don't have the time, or maybe you will want to take the survey once you hear about it.
Being the first one to arrive is never fun. Unfortunately, being on time is starting to mean being 15 minutes later than the agreed meeting time, so it's pretty hard to not be the first one at a place even if you arrive on time. The plus side is that your friends will appreciate how punctual and dependable you are, and maybe they'll try to change their ways.
There are two very different kinds of people, and you can figure out who is who at the hair salon. Some customers love to gab away with their stylist, but others find the forced conversation or the silence to be awkward. Even if it can be awkward at first, try to strike up a conversation with your stylist.
Forgetting A Name
Forgetting someone's name is so embarrassing, especially if you've met them multiple times. You're afraid to ask them what it is, since they might get mad at you. Some people are really understanding about this, but others will be offended if they discover you've forgotten their name. If you can find a moment to step away, ask someone else to remind you of their name.
