The gym sucks okay? Sure, there are people who love it and go because it keeps them in shape and helps clear their heads, but the vast majority of us really don't like it.
Well, one Reddit user recently tried to end this cordially over the phone with Planet Fitness, but she wasn't having it. He was told that he needed to send a formal letter because he lived in another state.
Oh, send a letter he did...
This user conducted a very formal letter expressing his regret for having to leave Planet Fitness for the convenience of a closer gym.
"I know I've been distant, but it's because I've changed. I have different needs now, and to be frank... you haven't really changed at all," he wrote. "[...] I don't want to change you, and it pains me to think that we were once one, but we are now separate and in different places." He then went on to explain that he's leaving for another gym and doesn't want Planet Fitness to judge him for his decisions. "That's not the Planet Fitness that I know and love. I still love you, but more like a friend at this place. I'm sorry things couldn't have been better between us," he wrote.
He made sure to remind Planet Fitness that he still remembers her (and her many locations) fondly. "However, all good things must come to an end and I hope this letter finds you well. You just keep being you, and while we both grow, it will be into our new lives without each other. I think this is for the better," he wrote.
Before signing off forever, he threw in that his wife also needed to cancel her membership.
In an interview with Insider, the man -- Robert Scucci -- spoke about his decision to end things with a formal letter. "I see people get so mad and worked up when they get jerked around by customer service, but the people working the desk/phone are just like us. Truth be told, I probably could have just dialed a manager's number and screamed at them until I got what I wanted ... but that's not my style," he said. "They requested a letter, and I like doing stupid things like this for my own amusement, so the breakup letter came out of that. They asked me to do a thing, and I didn't push back. I just thought, 'Huh, this could be fun.'"
Well, Planet Fitness wasn't ready to let Scucci go without a few parting words of their own.
They penned their own letter, which Insider published. The letter began by addressing Scucci as "Old Flame," before clarifying that they don't take life changes like this without some sort of written confirmation. They reminded Scucci that no one cares for him like they do and ended the letter with "You know what they say though, if you love something set it free... You'll come back, they always do."
We can all take a page from Scucci's playbook -- the next time you want to break up with your gym, you better make sure it's in writing... or else it doesn't count.
