Police officers put their lives on the line every day. Some days, the danger is worse than others. A day like that second day happened recently in Denver, Colorado when a police officer returned fire on an armed suspect that had recently robbed a 7/11. One of the bullets from the suspect hit the officer, and what the officer did after being shot was nothing less than heroic.
According to the Denver District Attorney, Carnell Nelson pulled a gun in a Denver convenience store and robbed the place. While he was attempting a getaway, he pulled the gun again, this time on a busy street as he was pursued by police. Nelson allegedly fired his weapon multiple times at the responding officers and one of the officers in pursuit was hit by one of the rounds in the leg. Incredibly, the officer barely even flinched and continued the pursuit and shootout.
The pursuit began when the clerk from the store that Nelson robbed flagged down two of Denver's finest. Officer Travis Lloyd was first to engage the suspect, who fired at least 5 shots at Lloyd while he and his partner, who was not named, pursued him. One of those five shots struck Officer Lloyd in the leg and another struck a bystander, who was also treated and released. Amazingly, Officer Lloyd didn't go down, he didn't even pause, but he did return fire, striking Nelson in the chest and killing him. In all, Lloyd fired 13 shots and the suspect went down.
A dramatic video released on the YouTube channel Police Activity shows the bodycam footage from both of the officer's cameras. As the shootout went on, Lloyd calmly told his partner that he has been shot in the leg and needed a tourniquet and his partner, equally calm, applied the tourniquet to Lloyd's bleeding leg. Had Lloyd not been heard in the videos that he'd been shot, the viewer would never know. That is one tough dude!
After an investigation into the shooting, the DA decided that Officer Lloyd and his partner were justified in their use of force and no charges were filed. It's safe to say that once a suspect actually shoots a cop, the cop is justified in returning fire.
The dramatic video starts with the officers running towards the suspects. Check it out!
