A college student in North Carolina who noticed clothes seemingly disappearing into thin air might have found the source of the mystery when she came home to find a man in her closet trying on her clothes.
Maddie, a student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro who didn't want to reveal her last name, told FOX8 that she came home in early February to the sound of scratching and rummaging coming from within her closet.
"I just hear rattling in my closet. It sounded like a raccoon in my closet," Maddie said. "I’m like who’s there? And somebody answers me. He’s like ‘oh my name is Drew.’ I open the door and he’s in there, wearing all of my clothes. My socks. My shoes. And he has a book bag full of my clothes."
But it would only get weirder from there.
When Maddie asked the man what he was doing in her closet, the man just kept trying on more articles of clothing, even going to the bathroom to look at himself in the mirror at some point.
“He tries on my hat. He goes in the bathroom and looks in the mirror and then is like ‘you’re really pretty, can I give you a hug?’" Maddie said. “But he never touched me.”
Maddie took several pictures of the man in her closet while he continued to riffle through her belongings, still never filling her in on why and how he got into her apartment. Without providing any answers, the man eventually left the apartment but was quickly picked up and arrested by local police, who identified the man as Andrew Swofford.
Now Maddie isn't the only ones scratching their heads trying to figure out how this could happen, as now Burkely Properties, the property manager, has opened an internal investigation to get to the bottom of the matter.
But Maddie doesn't feel safe in the apartment, even with Burkely Properties changing the locks and looking into the incident, so she plans on moving out as soon as possible.
“Last night I did not feel safe. I slept with my roommate in her bed,” she said. “I can’t stay here. My closet, it stinks. Every time I go in [my room] there’s a bad vibe. I’m just ready to leave.”
