The Amazon river and the jungle that surrounds it is one of the most deadly places on planet earth. It's chock full of poisonous insects, deadly snakes and apex predators. Anyone of these things could kill you in a heartbeat.

Amazonian Giant Centipedes

These suckers look scary and their venom can be deadly, as it's reportedly responsible for killing a child in Venezuela in 2014 after it was hidden in a soda can.

The Red Belly Pirahna

The classic Amazonian predator. Vicious and ruthless with schools of the fish able to clean the meat off a mammal in minutes.

Goliath Birdeater

Yes, this is a spider that does what its name says - it can eat birds as it can grow as large as a dinner plate. While birds may not always be on the menu, this blind big boy relies on vibrations to catch it prey, such as rodents, lizards, frogs, insects, and yes, sometimes birds.

Bull Sharks

These man-eaters are among the most dangerous sharks in the world and just because you might be far up upriver from the ocean, doesn't mean you are safe. They have been found often in freshwater rivers and canals, as it is thought that females give birth in the safer, calmer waters to protect their young.

Candirus

These tiny little parasitic fish are what nightmares are made of. Legend has it that Candris fish swim up the human urethra and expand, making them almost impossible to get out, though it has yet to be proven true.

Poison Dart Frog

These are NOT the kind of frogs that hippies should be going around and licking. Don't let their beautiful colors fool you. In the wild, the rule of thumb is the more brightly colored, the more poisonous, and these frogs are among the most poisonous and deadliest creatures on earth. Some say they can kill up to 10 men with a single touch!

Electric Eels

Yep, they are real and they can do real damage, delivering up to 600 volts of electricity, certainly enough to ruin a brisk swim in the river.

In fact, maybe it's best people stay out of the water. There are certainly a lot of animals capable of doing a lot of damage should a person encounter them,

Black Caimans

These prehistoric beasts are the apex predators in the Amazon. You don't want to run into a hungry one of these!
